Carly Bryson is a native Texan raised in the oilfields of west Texas somewhere between the Edwards Plateau and the Guadalajara desert. Currently residing in Houston, she writes poetry and prose dealing with politics, current events, nature, and family dynamics. She has been published in Carcinogenic Poetry, Calliope Nerve, The Shine Journal, ETC A Review of General Semantics as well as two anthologies, and NothingNoOneNowhere. Bandana Wasteland is her first collection of poetry and contains poems which address an increasingly dystopic and Orwellian society forming amidst an age of war, disinformation, media bias, environmental decline and propaganda.

Reviews

"Bryson's poems reek of Texas. Each piece is imbued and informed by a landscape which tests, but never tames her protagonists. In scenes sharply observed, her characters move through an adversarial world and while her narrators may not know for what they search, they are never without a moral compass. This ain't chick lit, kids. It's the human situation."
-Doc Sigerson, poet, essayist and translator

"The intense sensory details and arid landscapes Bryson paints with language will have readers reaching for a cold libation, then swimming in it. Picturesque, haunting and sublime is the wisdom woven into the tapestry that is Bandana Wasteland."
     - Apryl Skies, author of A Song Beneath Silence

"Carly Bryson's poetry is as gritty and deadly serious as the "bandana wasteland" and "big fried empty" of drought-stricken Chihuahua Desert, and as dense, humid and fecund as the "gauzy shadows" and "moss levees" of the bayous and delta of the Atchafalaya Basin. She captures the stark truth of life in both these dissimilar areas of her homelands that stretch from far West Texas to where Louisiana meets the Gulf of Mexico."
     - Donna Snyder, author of I Am South

In her debut collection, Carly Bryson craftily bridges reader and the gritty truths we are otherwise prone to avoid. As socially and politically aware as Dickens in his day, her learned narrative is exquisite in its honesty and her fluid descriptions beckon you to turn the page. The backdrop is a Texas not unlike Bogdonavich's The Last Picture Show and the messages and images ring universal as well. Bandana Wasteland is a thought-provoking harvest in a time where we question our bounty. A must read.

Bandana Wasteland takes you to West Texas with the words and pictures that form in your mind while reading these poems. You almost feel like your there in this vividly descriptive collection of masterpieces. I absolutely loved each and every poem in this book and will definitely read it several times more. Words cannot describe how good this is. This is a must read collection of poetry. A stunning reflection of the times we live in now. You will not be disappointed in this book. I highly recommend it to all poetry lovers and even people who don't regularly read poetry. Ms Bryson is a wonderful poet and I hope to see more in the future.
I read Carlene Bryson's collection of poems entitled `Bandana Wasteland' cover to cover at one setting without interruption. Her poems rekindled my own personal memories of dry, dusty, parched West Texas and my youthful reaction to this stark existential moonscape; created by an uncaring mother nature. While there is much ugliness in months and months of no rain, of parched broken land and searing sun, there is also beauty and a certain unique soulfulness that can be found there. It amazes me how similar Ms. Bryson's and my experience was of that era in time and how our experiences --that cannot be put in words--of that existence, mirror the raw texture we find in Sergio Leone's and Quentin Tarantino's film-making styles. Thank you for caring enough to put this into words. Your poems have an edgy, earthy feel to them and I was there.
Great little book of poems.
A small book that's a big read. Ms. Bryson takes some simple topics and surprises the reader with a turn of a phrase...a unique and questioning eye. The first poem, "Texas is Burning", sets the tone. From West Texas to Baytown, you can feel the oppression of weather, responsibilities and relationships in her prose. Texas in subject, universal in theme. Bandana Wasteland is worth a read...or two...or three.
I've read Carly's work over a period of time, however it wasn't as magical as this collection. From "Texas is Buring" to one of my favorites "Net". Known for her wonderful use of imagery, in this collection she couples that magic with a sophiscated word usage bringing the characters, emotions and passion of each piece to life. A must read.
