As Connor – an Irish slave – flees his captors, he runs into a war party of Goths riding to join the siege of Rome. His entanglement becomes complete when Connor realizes that the barbarians’ trajectory will lead them straight through the villa that he has just escaped, where Lucia – the master’s daughter and Connor’s secret love – would certainly become another of their victims.
Precariously befriended by the fledgling warlord, Valia, but simultaneously becoming the sworn enemy of the fearsome Gothic general, Sarus; Connor strives to rescue Lucia from the mounting crisis. But soon, it is not only Connor’s identity as a runaway slave that he must conceal; but also the blood on his hands.
While Connor may run from his past, there is no escaping the upheaval of a dying world. Swept on the tide of war to the very gates of Rome, Connor must choose between the system that elevated his mind but enslaved him, and the barbarians who promise him freedom but bring darkness.

The Songs of Slaves a Novel of the Fall of Rome eBook David Gray Rodgers

This is a wild ride, a tour through the ancient world, from Ireland to the gates of Rome, at its very fall. In it, we trod the steps of a hero who at first seems unlikely to get us there, but he does, and along the way with him we meet one of the greatest heroes of the age, ride historical waves that shape our own time even now, and find a love story . . . one unexpected.

The first couple pages are workmanlike as the author establishes a rhythm between the Irish of the coast, and the mysterious Roman who comes to visit them. But with the poles established, the story picks up speed. I could not put the book down as it went on a nonstop ride from that point forward.

I hope for two things in my historical fiction.
1) A rollicking good tale(!)to entertain; and
2) to feel as if I've gotten away with a little time travel, gone on a trip, seen the old world, in this case, and come out with the sense I picked up a few authentic things along the way.

All true in this case. The author doesn't belt you over the head with it, but it's clear he knows his stuff, loves this period, and is a good guide. If you liked "How the Irish Saved Civilization," this book is not that, but it draws on that saga, and there are fun allusions to uncover along that theme. All while introducing us to another part of the story most today know little about. After reading it, I wanted to find out more, and when I read further, the broader themes of the time was born out.

The Songs of Slaves is surprising and victorious, a good read.

The Songs of Slaves a Novel of the Fall of Rome eBook David Gray Rodgers Reviews

This is a daunting and enjoyable read. Deftly and colorfully written. I hope others find it as interesting I I do.
Starts out well but loses steam, especially in the second half of the book.
I couldn't put it down. I read through it in two days and thoroughly enjoyed the philosophical thought and spiritual questions mixed with the violence and heroism. Good read.
Historically, accurate, and exciting. It is apparent the author did diligent research in history, geography, gods, myth, religions, Christianity's introduction, philosophies countries, governing forces, the fighting styles and weaponry of different militia, and even classic italian vineyard wine making....
Worry not, the research has been done and IS distilled down to fast paced, action, emotional, and at times graphic, piece of historical fiction. A MUST read, page Turner.
ENJOY!
Enjoyed the story of the fall and sack of Rome. This should have been made into a series. It tells of an Irishman who is captured, becomes a Roman slave, who then becomes a barbarian soldier.
This book provides an interesting perspective of the fall of the Roman Empire through the eyes of a former slave captured from modern day Ireland, known as Hibernia. Connor begins his life as an orphan in Hibernia, taken as a slave and ends up fighting with the Visigoths against Rome. Along the way, he takes us on a tragic and heartbreaking journey showing a personal cost of slavery and violence within this world. Connor is a likable character, despite his flaws, and I enjoyed the book immensely and found the detailed word of mouth historical lessons from the Goths and Romans worthwhile.
The Songs of Slaves is a unique book, a view of the collapse of the Western Roman Empire through the eyes of underdogs. It's not about the big view of how it happened, it's the intimate view of why.

The story follows Connor, a head-strong, sometimes Hamlet-esque young man who was born a barbarian but reared in Roman ways until he is captured and sold as a slave. The depiction of human trafficking is gripping, but Rodgers then juxtaposes it with a complex internal drama as Connor struggles to find his place in a world where he can never rise above the lowest level. But just when I was deeply enmeshed in this there is a paradigm shift, and suddenly we are looking through the eyes of another kind of outsider as Connor joins the ranks of the Goths. Finally, the war between classes and cultures becomes a war within himself.

Well-written and well-constructed, The Songs of Slaves paints a picture of the last days of the Classical world - with all of its beauty and violence, passion and cruelty, philosophy and despair. A great story about a fascinating, widely misunderstood time.
